Meeting Report with the Incoming President of the Australian Institute of Architects _ FUJINUMA Masaru

2025年7月14日（月）、オーストラリア建築家協会 次期会長のデビット ワグナー氏が東京神宮前のJIAを訪れ、佐藤尚巳JIA会長と会談しました。藤沼傑UIA PPC委員・JIA国際委員によるレポートです。

2025年7月、オーストラリア建築家協会（Australian Institute of Architects, 以下AIA）の次期会長であるデビット・ワグナー氏とCEOカメロン・ブルン氏が、JIA（日本建築家協会）を表敬訪問され、佐藤会長との間で約1時間にわたる情報交換が行われました。
同氏は大阪万博のオーストラリア館にて国際賞の授与式に出席後、帰国前の貴重な時間を割いての来訪となりました。
デビット氏は、次期会長としての重点分野として以下の3点を挙げました。
• 国際活動の強化
• 持続可能な社会づくりへの貢献
• 地方における建築家活動の活性化
また、AIAとして日本への関心は非常に高く、統計的には毎年25人に1人の割合でオーストラリア人が日本を訪れているとのこと。JIAとの情報交換をより活発に行いたいという意向が示されました。
AIAも国際活動に力を入れており、以下の国際団体や会合に参加していることが紹介されました。
• アメリカ建築家協会（AIA）年次大会
• ARCASIA（アジア建築家評議会）
• CIA（旧英国植民地建築家連合）
• UIA（国際建築家連合）
これらの国際活動は30名程度のメンバーが中心となって進めているものの、その成果や情報を一般会員にどう伝えていくかが課題とのこと。JIAが国際委員会専用サイトで情報発信をしていることに関心を示され、参考にしたいとのコメントがありました。
環境に関する課題として、二酸化炭素削減量の計算方法が国際的に統一されておらず、どの方式が信頼に値するのか検討が必要という認識が示されました。日本独自の算定方法についても、今後参考にしたいという意向がありました。
オーストラリアでは経済成長に伴い移民が増加し、住宅供給が大きな課題となっているとのこと。また、老朽建物の解体・再開発も多く、日本における解体規制のあり方について質問があり、意見交換がなされました。
ワグナー氏はまた、官庁建築家や、我々の職業がどのように政府と関わっているかについても言及した。オーストラリアでは、政府のために働くガバメント・アーキテクトがおり、建築環境に関するアドバイスや建築業界の規制、主要プロジェクトの審査を行っている。
本会談では上記以外にも幅広いテーマについて活発な意見交換が行われ、今後も継続的にこのような交流の場を設けていきたいという希望が共有されました。
来年2026年は、日豪友好協力基本条約の締結から50周年を迎える節目の年となります。8月にはブリスベンにて記念イベントの開催が予定されています。
また、JIA2026年度大会は北海道での開催が予定されており、ニセコをはじめとする人気観光地との関連も踏まえ、AIAとしても同大会への協力に前向きな姿勢が示されました。

In July 2025, Mr. David Wagner FRAIA, the President Elect of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA), and Mr. Cameron Bruhn Hon. FRAIA, CEO paid a courtesy visit to the Japan Institute of Architects (JIA) and held a one-hour exchange of views with JIA President Mr. Sato.
They visited JIA shortly before his return to Australia, following his participation in an international awards ceremony held at the Australian Pavilion during Expo 2025 Osaka.
Mr. Wagner shared his priorities for the upcoming term, which include:
• Strengthening international engagement
• Promoting sustainable societies
• Revitalizing the activities of regional architects
He emphasized Australia’s strong interest in Japan, noting that statistically, one in every 25 Australians visits Japan annually. He expressed a clear desire to enhance the exchange of information between AIA and JIA going forward.
AIA is actively engaged in international activities and participates in the following organizations and events:
• AIA National Conference (U.S.)
• ARCASIA (Architects Regional Council Asia)
• CIA (Commonwealth Association of Architects)
• UIA (International Union of Architects)
While approximately 30 AIA members play central roles in these international initiatives, effectively communicating the knowledge gained to the broader membership remains a challenge. Mr. Wagner showed particular interest in JIA’s dedicated website for its International Committee as a possible model for sharing international information.
A topic of growing concern is the variety of methods used to calculate CO₂ reduction. There is a need for internationally trusted and standardized methods. Mr. Wagner expressed interest in Japan’s unique calculation methodologies and noted their potential as a useful reference for AIA.
Mr. Wagner explained that economic growth in Australia has led to increased immigration, making housing supply a pressing issue. Large-scale redevelopment projects involving the demolition of older buildings are common. He inquired about how demolition is regulated in Japan, prompting a mutual exchange of perspectives.
Mr. Wagner also mentioned his interest in government architects and how our profession engages with government. In Australia they have Government Architects who work for the government providing advice on the built environment, the regulation of the building industry and review of major projects.
In addition to the topics above, the meeting covered a wide range of issues faced by architectural associations. Both parties expressed the desire to continue holding such exchanges on a regular basis in the future.
The year 2026 will mark the 50th anniversary of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Japan and Australia. Commemorative events are scheduled to be held in Brisbane in August.
Additionally, the JIA’s 2026 Annual Conference is planned to be held in Hokkaido, a region that includes Niseko and other destinations popular among Australian visitors. Mr. Wagner expressed interest in supporting the conference and deepening the collaboration between the two institutes.
