2026年6月4日(木)、浅草・墨田エリアを対象に、PolyU SPEED（The Hong Kong Polytechnic University the School of Professional Education and Executive Development、香港理工大学専業進修学院）/ JIA / 千葉大学の国際学生ワークショップを開催しました。
PolyU SPEEDの学生たちとは「表参道建築ツアー（https://jia-intl.org/2024-6-9/）」から2年ぶり2度目の交流です。建設マネジメントを専攻する彼らにとって、東京への研修旅行企画自体がカリキュラムの一環になっているそうで、当初の対応可否の打診から直前のスケジュール調整まで、JIAとのやりとりは全て、今年の学生代表のWinsonさんが担当されました。JIA側は国際委員の伊藤友紀さんが窓口となり具体的な企画を進め、今回は千葉大学の協力を得て「ワークショップ形式」の交流イベントとなり、直前に台風6号の影響が心配されましたが、幸い雨はおさまり、曇り空の中、無事にワークショップが開催できました。
当日は浅草に集合し、JIA国際委員でありUIAとARCASIA両方の教育委員も務める千葉大学の柳澤要教授が学生たちにガイダンスをおこなった後、4グループに分かれて街歩き。浅草から隅田川を渡り、東京スカイツリーの建設に伴い整備された公園や北十間川の運河沿いを経由して墨田区の街を観察し、千葉大学墨田サテライトキャンパスでグループワークをおこないました。千葉大学からは大学院生・日本で建築を学ぶ海外からの留学生らが参加、少し年若い香港の学生たちをリードして、電線の地中化等の香港と日本の違いについて、川沿いの空間の魅力について、火事・地震・津波に対する街の問題点とソリューション等、街歩きを通して得た気づきや提案が発表されました。
全行程あわせてわずか4時間のイベントでしたが、学生同士が別れ際に連絡先を交換している様子に、私自身が学生時代に参加したワークショップでできた友人と後に仕事で再会した経験が思い出されました。今回の企画が彼らの将来の何かにつながれば幸いです。また、PolyU SPEEDの引率の先生は2年前と同じEdmondさんとSteveさん、JIA側も2年前とほぼ同じメンバーで、2年ぶりの再会を喜び、2年後にまた、とお話ししました。今回は学生主導の企画で社会人の我々は見守りの立場でしたが、実務家の集団であるJIAにも常勤・非常勤で建築教育に携わる建築家は（私自身も含め）多いので、こうした学生ワークショップの機会を、大学あるいは社会における建築教育についての社会人同士の知見交換や交流をサブテーマとして含んだ形に発展させた企画がデザインできれば、よりJIAらしい活動に繋がっていくのではないかと感じます。

Theme: Asakusa and Sumida area: A Neighborhood Survey / Proposal
Introduction:
Metropolitan Tokyo is the world’s most populated region with a population of 35 million. In the 23 wards of the Tokyo municipality, there are a numerous neighborhoods with density beyond the western standards. The Tokyo residents for the past two hundred years have been accustomed to living in such high-density environment. Edo in the 1800’s, the name Tokyo was called until 1867 when the Meiji government changed it, the population was over a million, then the largest in the world. As one can identify these high-density neighborhoods in a number of wards in Tokyo, our present assignment will focus on one such local neighborhood, Asakusa and Sumida area is a neighborhood where a modern landscape symbolized by the “Sensō-ji temple” and “Tokyo Skytree” coexists with the atmosphere of a traditional district, where history dating back to the Edo period. Surrounded by rich waterfront spaces such as the Sumida River and Kitajukken River, each neighborhood possesses its own unique character. At the same time, the district has a history of recovery from devastating disasters, including the Great Kanto Earthquake and the Tokyo Air Raids. The workshop will focus on the survey and proposal in Asakusa and Sumida area.
Purpose:
The purpose of this workshop exercise is to understand the high-density urban neighborhood in Tokyo downtown with both traditional and contemporary Japanese townscape.
Goal:
Student teams are asked to make an observation on the component of the target neighborhood i.e. buildings, streets, garden, riverside, shopping street. After conducting a field survey of the neighborhood, organize your team’s observations, visual materials and thoughts in relation to the context. Then, prepare a report of your survey in visual format e.g. the presentation boards, and also prepare a proposal, which, in your opinion, will “improve” the neighborhood in the values you define.
